What are Bunions & Hammertoes?
A bunion is a bony bump that forms at the base of the big toe, causing the joint to protrude outward. It develops gradually as the bones shift out of alignment. A hammertoe is a deformity where one or more toes bend downward at the middle joint, often due to muscle imbalance or pressure from ill-fitting shoes. Both conditions can worsen over time if left untreated.
Symptoms of Bunions & Hammertoes
- Pain, swelling, or redness near the big toe joint or affected toe
- Difficulty wearing shoes comfortably
- Stiffness or limited motion in the toe joint
- Corns or calluses forming due to friction
- Changes in the shape or alignment of the toes
How We Treat Bunions & Hammertoes
At Lighthouse Foot and Ankle, we begin with a detailed evaluation to determine the severity of the condition and its root cause. Conservative treatments may include custom orthotics, padding, footwear changes, and physical therapy. When necessary, surgical options are available to realign the bones and restore function. Dr. Kurlanski uses modern, minimally invasive techniques whenever possible to reduce recovery time and improve outcomes.
