What is Heel Pain?
Heel pain typically results from strain or inflammation in the structures that support the heel, most commonly the plantar fascia—a thick band of tissue that connects the heel to the toes. Other causes include heel spurs, bursitis, nerve entrapments, or overuse injuries. It can affect one or both feet and may worsen with activity or after rest.
Symptoms of Heel Pain
- Sharp pain when first stepping out of bed
- Aching or throbbing in the heel after standing or walking
- Swelling or tenderness near the bottom or back of the heel
- Pain that increases with activity or prolonged standing
- Difficulty walking barefoot or on hard surfaces
How We Treat Heel Pain
Treatment begins with a thorough biomechanical evaluation, including gait analysis and imaging when needed. Depending on the cause, Dr. Kurlanski may recommend custom orthotics, targeted stretching, EPAT (shockwave therapy), taping, physical therapy, or minimally invasive procedures. Every treatment plan is customized to relieve pain, promote healing, and prevent recurrence.
