Treat Your Feet Well/ Prevent Problems with Proper Fitting Shoes

Neglecting and mistreating our feet cause most of the foot problems we experience, so being aware of and addressing issues that could result in foot discomfort are critical. Shoes are one of the few articles of clothing that impact our health. Paying special attention to what shoes you wear at any age will prevent problems in the future.

Soft flexible shoes are the best for children as they learn to walk. Children’s feet grow quickly and shoes that fit a week ago may not fit today! As parents, we should check to see if the shoes still fit every few months.

School-aged children should be encouraged early on to try a variety of sports rather than just one since the repetition of specific motion can lead to foot and ankle injuries.Having a couple of pairs of sneakers is a good idea, one for school and one for sports. We do not recommend handing down sneakers or cleats to siblings. Kids should avoid wearing wet sneakers and socks as it can lead to warts, athlete’s foot, or ingrown toenails.

While walking, the force exerted on your feet is more than your body weight and when running it can be three to four times your body weight, so properly fitting shoes specific to the exercise or sport should be worn by individuals of all ages. Sandals are best for the beach and high-top boots for hiking. When selecting shoes, try them on both feet instead of just one. Be sure to buy shoes later in the day due to account for swelling. We recommend having your feet measured periodically. You may find that one foot may be bigger than the other or that your shoe size has changed. For everyday footwear, avoid extreme styles, such as high heels and very pointy toes. Save these types of shoes for special occasions. Have more than one pair of shoes handy, alternate wearing them while at work or on vacation.
