 Frequently Asked Questions about Class IV Laser Treatment for Fungal Nails

  • The laser is oxidizing fungus as well as stimulating healthy new collagen to make the toenail pretty and healthy.

  • There is no pain. Typically there is a slight warm sensation to the toes.

  • Laser for fungal nails is considered cosmetic procedure.

  • 4 - 6 months before you start to notice new nail growth. It may take 12 to 18 months before the nails totally improve.

  • Yes. We suggest not getting the nails polished. If you want to get the nails polished for a special event, we suggest removing the polish as soon as possible. Avoid having the cuticles removed as they act as a protective barrier.

  • Yes. New active fungus can "sprout" during treatment. Avoid going into public showers.

  • Yes. We recommend wearing socks with silver and disinfecting shoes after working out. Wear deck sandals or shoes when swimming in public pools.

  • 70 - 80%. The outcome greatly depends on the number of nails involved, duration of the infection and how much of each nail is infected.

  • Fungus unfortunately can come back. It is very important to be evaluated for any signs of new infection. We will show important preventive tips to help prevent fungal infection re-occurrence. Occasionally addition laser treatment may be helpful.

  • Nail thickness after treatment can be due to repetitive microtrauma to the nail similar to a callus. We will need to address any faulty biomechanics contributing to the condition.
