Every year around this time, I hear a version of the same question:
“If I start treatment now, will my toenails be clear by July 4th?”
I understand the question.
Summer is here. Sandals are coming out. Beach vacations are on the calendar. Pool parties, weddings, and family gatherings are around the corner.
Nobody wants to feel self-conscious about their toenails.
The honest answer?
Probably not.
But that doesn’t mean you should wait.
In fact, waiting is one of the biggest mistakes people make when it comes to fungal nail treatment.
The Biggest Misunderstanding About Fungal Nails
Many people think fungal nail treatment works like treating a skin infection.
You take a medication, apply a cream, or have a procedure done, and a few weeks later everything looks normal again.
Toenails don’t work that way.
Unlike skin, nails grow incredibly slowly.
Even after the fungus is no longer actively damaging the nail, the existing damaged nail still has to grow out and be replaced with healthier nail.
That’s why fungal nail treatment is often a marathon rather than a sprint.
Why Toenails Take So Long to Improve
Most toenails grow only one to two millimeters per month.
A completely new toenail can take 12 to 18 months to grow from the base of the nail to the tip.
That means meaningful improvement takes time.
Many patients expect dramatic changes within a few weeks and become discouraged when they don’t see them.
What I tell patients is this:
The yellow, thickened nail you see today is already damaged.
Fungal organisms feed on keratin, the protein that makes up your nail. Over time, they digest and alter that keratin, leaving behind the thick, yellow, brittle nail that many people recognize as a fungal nail.
Think of it like a piece of wood that has started to rot.
You can’t “un-rot” wood.
Even after you eliminate the source of the damage, the rotted wood doesn’t magically become healthy wood again. It has to be removed and replaced with new wood.
Toenails work the same way.
Once the fungus has damaged the nail, that damaged nail cannot suddenly become healthy again. Instead, the goal is to stop the ongoing damage and allow healthy new nail to grow in behind it.
That’s why treatment is often less about making the existing nail look better and more about creating the conditions for healthier nail growth moving forward.
The first signs of success usually appear at the base of the nail, near the cuticle.
Many patients are surprised when I point to a thin strip of clearer nail and say, “That’s what success looks like.”
It’s not exciting.
It’s not dramatic.
But it’s often the first sign that treatment is working.
Month by month, that healthy nail slowly advances forward, replacing the damaged nail that may have been there for years.
Why Summer Is Actually a Great Time to Start
This surprises people.
Many assume they should wait until fall or winter because they won’t have clear nails by summer anyway.
But that thinking puts you another six months behind.
The patients who have the best-looking nails next summer are often the ones who started treatment this summer.
Every month you wait is another month that healthy nail growth isn’t happening.
The earlier you begin, the sooner the growth process starts.
Future you will be glad you did.
Your Nails Actually Grow Faster in the Summer
Here’s another reason not to wait.
Toenails tend to grow faster during the warmer months.
Researchers believe this is related to increased circulation, higher activity levels, and seasonal changes in metabolism. Whatever the exact reason, studies have consistently shown that nails generally grow more quickly in the summer than they do in the winter.
That means summer is one of the best times to start treatment.
Remember, the goal isn’t simply to kill fungus.
The goal is to replace damaged nail with healthy nail.
And replacement only happens through growth.
If your nail is growing faster, you’re moving healthy nail forward faster.
Think back to the rotted wood analogy.
You can’t “un-rot” wood.
You have to replace it.
The same is true with fungal nails.
The yellow, thickened nail you see today has already been damaged by the fungus. The only way to improve its appearance is to grow healthier nail behind it and gradually replace the damaged portion.
Summer gives you a natural advantage because your body is already in a season of faster nail growth.
The sooner you begin treatment, the sooner you can take advantage of that growth cycle.
Many people assume they should wait until sandal season is over.
I would argue the opposite.
If your goal is healthier-looking nails next summer, this summer is exactly when you should be starting.
Not Every Thick or Discolored Nail Is Fungus
Before talking about treatment, it’s important to discuss diagnosis.
One of the biggest reasons people fail treatment is because they never confirmed what they were treating.
Not every thick, yellow, white, or damaged nail is fungal.
Sometimes repeated trauma from running, hiking, or tight shoes is the culprit.
Sometimes psoriasis affects the nail.
Sometimes multiple issues are occurring at the same time.
If the diagnosis is wrong, the treatment is unlikely to work.
That’s why identifying the cause is one of the most important steps in the process.
Why “I’ve Tried Everything” Is Often Misleading
Many patients arrive frustrated.
They’ve tried over-the-counter products.
They’ve purchased expensive treatments online.
They’ve soaked, scrubbed, filed, painted, and experimented with every remedy they could find.
Yet the nail still looks the same.
What they often haven’t had is a comprehensive treatment plan.
Fungal nails are rarely a one-treatment problem.
Successful treatment often requires addressing multiple factors at the same time.
The nail itself is only part of the story.
Our Approach: More Than Just Laser Treatment
One of the most common misconceptions is that laser treatment is a magic wand.
It’s not.
Laser therapy is a tool.
A very useful tool, but still just one piece of the puzzle.
At Lighthouse Foot and Ankle Center, we often combine therapies depending on the severity of the infection, the number of nails involved, your overall health, and your treatment goals.
Your treatment plan may include laser therapy, prescription topical medications, oral antifungal medication when appropriate, and daily home care strategies designed to support healthier nail growth.
For many patients, we also discuss shoe hygiene, sock hygiene, and long-term prevention strategies. We frequently incorporate our Lighthouse Daily Defense Spray and Repair + Restore Serum as part of a broader treatment protocol designed to support healthy skin and nail care at home.
Each patient is different.
The goal is not simply to throw treatments at the problem.
The goal is to create the right combination for the best possible outcome.
Why Prevention Matters Just As Much As Treatment
This is the part many people overlook.
Even if we improve the nail, fungal organisms can still exist in the environment around you.
Shoes, socks, shower floors, locker rooms, and even the skin of the feet can all contribute to recurrence.
That’s why we spend time discussing prevention and maintenance.
Healthy nail growth doesn’t happen in isolation.
The environment surrounding the nail matters too.
The patients who achieve the best long-term results are often the ones who continue supporting healthy nail growth long after treatment is complete.
What Success Actually Looks Like
Success doesn’t happen overnight.
It happens gradually.
Month by month.
You may first notice a clearer section of nail growing from the base.
Then less discoloration.
Then healthier growth replacing damaged areas.
Over time, the nail begins to look more normal.
For some patients, complete clearing is possible.
For others, especially those with severe infections, years of nail damage, or underlying medical conditions, significant improvement may be a more realistic goal.
The important thing is understanding that progress—not perfection—is often the first milestone.
Every millimeter of healthy nail growth is evidence that your nail is moving in the right direction.
The Best Time to Start Was Yesterday. The Second Best Time Is Today.
If you’ve been putting off treatment because summer is already here, don’t.
Waiting until next year simply means you’ll be having the same conversation next summer.
Every healthy nail starts with today’s decision.
The sooner treatment begins, the sooner healthier growth can begin.
And thanks to the faster nail growth that naturally occurs during the summer months, there’s no better time to get started.
