Essential Home Hygiene Tips to Prevent Fungal Infections

As a podiatrist, I often encounter patients struggling with fungal infections of the feet. Athlete’s foot infections can be uncomfortable, scaly, red, itchy, and persistent if not treated properly.  Ignoring thick yellow crumbly toenails will spread if left untreated. While it's crucial to seek professional advice for treatment, practicing good home hygiene is equally important in preventing the occurrence and spread of fungal infections. Here are some essential home hygiene tips that can help you keep fungal infections at bay and keep your feet happy and healthy.

Keep Your Feet Clean and Dry:

Fungi thrive in warm, dark, moist environments, making your feet an ideal breeding ground while feasting on the keratin in your nails and skin. To prevent fungal infections, it's vital to keep your feet clean and dry. Follow these steps for optimal foot hygiene:

  • Wash your feet daily with mild soap and warm water. Make sure to clean between the toes and gently scrub the soles of your feet.

  • After washing, thoroughly dry your feet, paying special attention to the spaces between your toes. Moisture can get trapped in these areas, providing an ideal environment for fungal growth.

  • Use a clean towel and ensure it's completely dry before using it on your feet.

Wear Breathable Footwear:

Your choice of footwear greatly influences foot hygiene. Opt for shoes that allow your feet to breathe, as this helps in moisture evaporation and reduces the risk of fungal infections. Consider the following recommendations:

  • Avoid tight-fitting shoes that squeeze your toes together, as this can create a warm and humid environment, promoting fungal growth.

  • Whenever possible, wear open-toed shoes or sandals to provide ventilation and reduce moisture build-up.

  • Wear sneakers with a mesh toebox in warmer weather.

  • Always wear socks with your shoes!!!

Sanitize Your Shoes

Shoes can harbor fungal spores, bacteria, and other microorganisms that can cause infections. Sanitizing your shoes helps eliminate these harmful pathogens, reducing the risk of foot infections such as athlete's foot and toenail fungus. This is especially important if you have sweaty feet or have been exposed to public areas where these organisms thrive.  We recommend Clean Sweep Shoe Spray to sanitize your shoes.

Rotate Your Shoes:

Wearing the same pair of shoes every day prevents them from fully drying out between uses. This increases the likelihood of fungal growth. Instead, practice shoe rotation to allow them ample time to air out and dry. This can be particularly beneficial if you have an active lifestyle or tend to sweat excessively. Ideally, alternate between two or more pairs of shoes to give each pair at least 24 hours of rest before wearing them again.

Use Antifungal Powders or Sprays:

Incorporating antifungal powders or sprays into your foot hygiene routine can help create an inhospitable environment for fungal growth. Consider these tips:

  • After washing and drying your feet, apply an antifungal powder or spray to your feet and inside your shoes.

  • Look for products containing ingredients like clotrimazole or miconazole, which are effective against common fungal infections.

  • Remember to follow the instructions provided on the product packaging for optimal use.

Avoid Walking Barefoot in Public Areas:

Walking barefoot in public areas, such as locker rooms, swimming pools, and communal showers, significantly increases your risk of contracting fungal infections. To protect your feet:

  • Always wear sandals, flip-flops, or water shoes in these environments to minimize direct contact with contaminated surfaces.

  • If you have no choice but to walk barefoot in these areas, ensure you thoroughly clean and dry your feet afterward.

Wear Moisture Wicking Socks

Avoid socks made of sweat inducing synthetic material.  Choose socks like sixsocks made of breathable yarn woven with silver to wick away moisture and kill odor causing bacteria and fungus.

Practicing good home hygiene is an essential aspect of preventing fungal infections.
