After your cancer treatment, do you find that your feet burn and tingle, or worse, they are numb? Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a widespread experience following cancer treatment. About 30 to 40 percent of the patients treated with chemotherapy develop symptoms such as numbness, burning, tingling, cold intolerance, problems with balance, and instability. Neuropathy can impact your hands as well as your feet. You may have trouble buttoning a shirt or feeling something hot on the stove. The pins and needles sensations are worse at night and can be frustrating when trying to sleep.
Tips to help those who suffer from CIPN.
Avoid extremely hot or cold temperatures to prevent injury to the skin.
Avoid snug socks and tight shoes.
Wear slippers in the house and avoid going barefoot.
Don't drink alcohol. It causes nerve damage on its own and will make the symptoms worse.
If you have diabetes, try to keep your HbA1c under 6.0. High blood sugar levels can damage nerves.
Walking 15 minutes a day improves the circulation to the nerves. Using walking sticks will make you feel steadier.
Check your feet daily for any cracks in the skin, loose toenails, or signs of infection.
