Frequently Asked Questions about Custom Molded Orthotics

Custom Molded orthotics vs Over the Counter orthotics

  • Custom molded orthotics are directly molded to a patient's foot. OTC inserts are generic and may only address the arch height, high medium, and low. Sizing is based on a range of sizes, not your exact size.

  • Custom molded orthotics give a 3-dimensional correction. We can lower or raise the arch, plantarflex a metatarsal or add a heel lift.

  • Custom molded orthotics are durable and can last 3-4 years depending upon use. Over-the-counter inserts last 6 to 9 months.

How can you tell if I need custom-molded orthotics?

  • OTC inserts failed to alleviate your pain

  • If you have arthritis in the big toe joint or a bunion deformity

  • If you have an excessively high or low arch

  • You have an injury on one side like tendonitis

  • Your feet feel tired after standing

How long do orthotics last?

  • Custom molded orthotics last 3-5 years depending on how often you wear the orthotics.

  • The top covers may wear out before the orthotics do.

What type of shoes can I wear with my orthotics?

  • We recommend shoes with a removable sock liner. Running shoes or sneakers work best. Custom molded orthotics can be made to fit in sport-specific shoe wear like ski boots and cycling shoes.

  • Custom orthotics do not work well with Crocs or sandals.

Can I move my orthotics from shoe to shoe?

  • Yes! If you can remove the sock liner of the shoes you can put your orthotics in them. We recommend dress orthotics for dress shoes as these shoes are narrower.

Are custom molded orthotics covered under insurance?

  • Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans do not cover orthotics. Some insurance plans have very limited coverage. We do not participate with insurance but would be happy to provide you with a superbill to submit to your insurance.

Are adjustments covered after the orthotics are made?

  • Minor adjustments are included and can be made up to 60 days after dispensing the device.

How should I care for my orthotics?

  • You may clean your orthotics periodically with mild soap and water. You can use a light brush to remove any debris. Let them air dry, away from direct sunlight. Don't leave your orthotics in your car as the excessive heat can cause the top cover to lift off the device.

When do I need a new pair of custom molded orthotics?

  • When you have new foot, hip, or knee pain.

  • If the orthotics are broken

  • You have gained or lost weight

  • Your feet have changed size
