Dry, Cracked Heels: A Comprehensive Skincare Regimen

Dealing with dry, cracked heels can be both uncomfortable and unsightly. Establishing a consistent skincare regimen is key to promoting healing and preventing further issues.

Here's a step-by-step guide to caring for your dry, cracked heels

1. Soak and Exfoliate

Start your regimen with a warm foot soak to soften the skin. Add a few drops of gentle liquid soap or 2 TBS of Epsom salts to the water. After soaking for 15-20 minutes, use a pumice stone or foot file to gently exfoliate the dead skin.  Avoid aggressive filing as this may cause the skin to bleed.  Exfoliating helps to smooth the heels and prepare them for hydration.  We recommend soaking 1 to 2 times per week.

2. Gentle Cleansing

Wash your feet daily in the shower with a mild, moisturizing soap. Avoid harsh soaps that can strip away natural oils. Pat your feet dry gently, paying extra attention to the spaces between the toes.

3. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize

Apply a rich, hydrating foot cream or ointment immediately after drying your feet. Avoid lotions as they do not hydrate as well.  Look for products containing ingredients like shea butter, glycerin, urea, or hyaluronic acid.  Avoid applying moisturizer between the toes.

4. Targeted Treatments

Consider using specialized heel balms or overnight treatments that are formulated to penetrate deeply and provide intense hydration. Apply these treatments before bedtime, and for added benefit, wear moisture-locking socks to enhance absorption.

5. Wear Proper Footwear

Choose shoes with good arch support and a proper fit. Avoid open-back shoes or sandals that expose your heels to harsh conditions. In colder months, ensure your footwear provides adequate insulation to prevent moisture loss.

6. Hydration from Within

Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Proper hydration promotes overall skin health, and well-hydrated skin is less prone to dryness and cracking.  We recommend drinking one-half once per pound you weigh. If you weigh 160lbs drink 80 oz of water.

7. Protect Your Heels

If your daily activities involve prolonged standing or walking, consider using silicone heel cups or cushions. These provide additional support and help distribute pressure evenly, reducing the risk of further heel damage.

8. Regular Maintenance

Incorporate routine maintenance into your skincare regimen. Trim your toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails, and address any calluses or corns promptly. Regular self-checks help prevent minor issues from escalating.
