5 Tips to Keep You on the Trail this Fall

Are you thinking about going hiking this Fall? You should! Maine has some of the most beautiful fall foliage in the world and it shouldn’t be missed. Here are some quick tips to keep your feet healthy and help you on the trail!

1.     Pick the Right Shoes

Sandals and flip-flops aren’t going to cut it on a hike. Make sure you find something with proper support on your hike. On flatter terrain, sneakers will work just fine, but on tougher trails make sure to find a wide shoe with ankle support to avoid any injuries.  Both Keen and Merrill make great hiking shoes if you’re looking for where to start.

2.     Socks!

Blisters can be a hiker’s worst nightmare, so packing and wearing the right pairs of socks is key to a successful hike. Often, ordinary socks aren’t going to cut it, so make sure to wear a pair of properly fitting wool blend socks. And don’t forget to bring an extra pair! Hiking with wet socks can easily cause painful blisters that will make you miserable, so having a clean and dry pair is essential for hiking.

3.     Dress for the Weather

The Fall weather in Maine can change quickly so keep an eye on forecasts as you hit the trail. As things cool down, dress in layers. Stay away from cotton because it is slow to dry and is less durable. Wear a polyester base to wick away sweat, a warm middle layer, and a raincoat or windbreaker to protect against the elements.

4.     Don’t Forget the Hiking Poles!

Taking a fall on a hike is never fun, so even the most experienced hikers still bring along a pair of hiking poles. Long hikes with uneven terrain can prove to be dangerous without a set of hiking poles. Hiking poles can add much needed support to these types of hikes. Not only do they provide extra stability, but they also help redistribute your weight and reduce the strain on your knees, ankles, and feet.

5.     Find the Best Hike for You

Picking the right hike for yourself is crucial. Maine has plenty of hikes to offer ranging from flat paved paths on the Eastern Trail to the Knife’s Edge on Katahdin. Hiking a trail that is too difficult can result in injury or even getting lost so make sure to find one suitable for you. Some of our favorite places to hike are Bradbury State Park in Pownal, the Eastern Promenade in Portland, and Wolfe’s Neck State Park in Freeport.
